Storm Update, Cloud Seeding in the US, Winter Sports

The last few posts have been about the storm and included the article from Green Bay.  They did add a few new things so if you already looked at it you might find new information.  I really like the map that showed the snow cover before the storm and then after.  It is dramatically different!  They also mention the turn “bomb” which is something we rarely talk about.  It is a meteorological term for when the pressure drops more than 24 millibars in 24 hours.  It’s really neat to see the path the storm took and how it effected our area.

I did a blog about cloud seeding in our countries but now it is coming to America.  In this article it states that government agencies and utilities spend 15 million a year on cloud seedings in the US.  Now that may sound like alot but China actually spends 100 million on it! Cloud seeding is believed to increase the rainfall by spraying chemicals into clouds.  The article has some interesting points why if it actually is proven to work it could be effective.  Alot of the reasons relate to agriculture and energy.

Looks like the snow is helping our local snow enthusaists! Granite Peak opened today and 9 mile is scheduled to open on Monday.  I believe that the snowmobile trails will be opening soon too! The fresh snow we see on Monday will only help all these winter sports.  For snow conditions check out this website!  Get out and have fun!

Have a good night! Meteorologist Kristen Connolly
