Hurricane Ida, Community Events, Record High

Vacationing in Mexico in the beginning of November you wouldn’t typically expect getting hit by a tropical storm of hurricane.  However, tourists and residents have been feeling the brunt of Ida, a once hurricanenow a strong tropical storm, with winds of 70 mph and moving north at 10 mph.

Officially hurricane season goes through the end of November although we have already passed our peak time. As of 7pm eastern time the storm was located around 180 miles east southeast of Cozumel.  It will be affecting the Yucatan Peninsula over the next 36hours and will then move into the Gulf Sunday night.  The area will receive high winds and rainfall as it passes with areas possibly seeing up to 10 inches.  Cuba will also feel the affects of Ida with hurricane winds possible depending on when it strengthens.  It is likely to become a hurricane overnight or Sunday but will weaken as it heads into the Gulf.  Right now the guld coast needs to be on alert for changes in this storm.

For official info on the track and watches and warnings you can head to NHC.  Here is a story about Mexico preparing for the storm

Today I participated in Science ID)OLS, a program for 6th grade girls.  It was fun teaching kids about weather and what it is like to be a meteorologist.  It is always good to see girls that love math and science like I did when I was young. I hope all the girls learned something from their sessions and enjoy their time at UWMC.

I also went down to Wisconsin Rapids yesterday and was the guest on River Cities Today on the Public Access TV station.  It was great to be able to get to know more people and be apart of a community based show.  I really enjoyed my time down there and want to thank them for having me on!

Lastly, Rhinelander tied their record high for Nov 7th- 65, it was tied today with the high set back in 1949!

Hope you enjoyed the weather today, 60’s in November! Have a great night. Meteorologist Kristen Connolly
