The warm and humid weather has finally left the state, and by the end of this week we’ll likely have our first frost in Wausau (Friday night), and possibly even a freeze in spots in the Northwoods. With cooler weather on the brain, it’s time for our First Snowfall Contest! We want to see if you can correctly guess the date when the first full inch of snow will fall at our station in Wausau.

We had a weak La Nina in place last year, and La Nina is favored to develop once again this year. Even though our average high temperature last November was 10 degrees(!!) above normal and it was the second warmest November on record, our first full inch of snow fell on November 22nd, which is about normal. With a La Nina expected, it most likely won’t occur after Christmas like it 2015 when a strong El Nino was in place. Here are some of the winning dates from previous years:

The entry period runs through Friday October 6th at 11:59 p.m. You can enter HERE or mail in your guess to 1908 Grand Ave. Wausau, WI 54403, but you only get ONE guess. If you guess more than one date your entry will not count. Here is a full list of rules.

Now what can you win?! If you guess the correct date, you will be entered in a random drawing to win the top prizes. The grand prize is a $250 R-Store gift card, along with a year supply of free car washes at any R-Store location. Other top prizes are:

  • 2nd place: $150 R-store gift card
  • 3rd place: $100 R-store gift card
  • 4th place: $50 R-store gift card
  • 5th place: $25 R-store gift card

If you guess the winning date, but don’t win one of the top prizes, you’ll still win a coupon for a free car wash at the R-Store! (And trust me, you’ll be wishing for a free car wash in a couple of months.) Good luck!
