Epic February 2019 Recap

February 28, 2019 0 Comments

I remember after the brutal winter of 2013-14 that people distributed buttons that said “I survived the winter of 2013-14”.  I think someone should make buttons that say “I survived February 2019”.

The numbers for the month are just mind-boggling.  We had snow on seventeen days with three of those being record daily snowfalls (6.5″ on the 7th, 15.7″ on the 12th, and 7.6″ on the 24th) in Wausau.  The 15.7″ of course is the all-time daily highest snow for any day of the year in Wausau.

Of course the February total snowfall of 54.3″ is the greatest monthly snowfall on record for any month in Wausau and almost 4 feet above normal.   The precipitation total (melted snow and rain combined) was a staggering 3.19″ above normal.  As it turns out February 2019 was the 2nd wettest February on record for Wausau.

In addition we had a lot of days with freezing drizzle which only compounded the dangerous road and sidewalk conditions and made it especially tough on our road crews and schools.

It was no warm month, that’s for sure.  Temperatures averaged about 5.8 degrees below normal.  We had a record cold high temperature of 4 degrees on the 25th.

And don’t forget, we had a blizzard warning on February 24th.  That was the first time since December of 2009 with a blizzard warning for most of our area.  I doubt we will have a February this bizarre anytime soon.
