Very wet July

July 23, 2019 0 Comments

As you know we have had some heavy rain events this month in our region.  Through July 23rd this has amounted to a total of 6.05″ at the Wausau Downtown Airport.  That is 3.24″ ahead of the normal pace for this point in the month.

If not another drop of rain fell for the rest of the month, July 2019 would go down as the 13th wettest July on record in Wausau.  If we see our total climb up to 7″, then we would be in the top ten wettest.  If we really get swamped with a couple of big downpours and pump the total up to 9″, then we would have a top five wettest.

The all-time wettest July in Wausau is from 1900 when a crazy 13.02″ of rain fell!  It is highly unlikely that we will touch that, but it can’t be ruled out either.  We have already seen parts of the state pick up 4 or 5 inches of rain in one band of storms this July.

We do have several days with thunderstorm potential in the forecast.  The more likely timeframe for some persistent heavier showers would be from Friday through Sunday July 26th through July 28th.  We will keep an eye on it and let you know more about potential rain totals as the pattern develops.  Stay tuned to News 9!
